Overcoming Fear Following her first children's book, What If? Jimetta Mayne delivers another Adventure with Grandma Metta. The author applies her heart coaching skills as she addresses negative emotions that block her grandchildren's desires for freedom and peace. One by one she gives them the opportunity to articulate their fears, note their choices, and step in the direction of faith.
Spilling out of their car and into the arms of their joyful Grandma, Josh, Sophie, and Caleb are in for a time of exploring their external world that exposes hidden fears as they play on the lake, sleep under the stars, and even swing off a rope into the water. At every opportunity the author uses several strategies to encourage her young friends to walk away from fear into new experiences.
One strategy is for Grandma Metta to observe and fully listen to what her grandchildren are not saying by their behavior. She goes for the heart as she asks Caleb what he is really afraid of. Without cajoling or persuading she declares that there is no shame in being afraid. With patient encouragement she supports her youngest grandchild when he is ready to face his fear.
The author reveals how we draw courage from another as we see those around us push through fear. This happens when Caleb's chooses to trust God with the unseen things in the water. This gives his two older siblings the courage to push through their own challenges.
Our imagination is a gift from God but at an early age we unconsciously allow it to be driven in the wrong direction by things we don't know or understand. When Sophie squeals out in fear about the night noises, her older brother is unable to comfort her due to his own fear. Grandma Metta is on the ready to provide the safety net of truth, bringing a sense of safety followed by peace that leads to sleep!
Another strategy shows how identifying with another's emotion enables them to feel they are not alone like they are the only one struggling to disallow fear from swallowing peace in their hearts. When the author show's how this it is done, a lifeline is thrown to little Sophie which helps her relax and enjoy the fun adventure she's wanted with her siblings and dear grandma.
